Ubisoft’s upcoming “Star Wars Outlaws” video game has found itself the subject of controversy over the past few days.

It began late last week when it was confirmed that a restriction had been placed on physical copies of the game, specifying that you would need an Internet connection to install the game from the disc.

Around 10% of new games these days have this requirement and that number is growing. As much of the market is digital these days, it’s not a big an issue as it once was, but for certain players it is a big problem.

However the outrage over that pales in comparison to yesterday’s news that whilst the game’s ‘Season Pass’ DLC will include “two additional narrative expansions coming after launch,” there’s a little something extra.

Specifically an exclusive mission with Jabba the Hutt called “Jabba’s Gambit” is being locked behind the special editions (Gold/Ultimate) of the game from launch day.

Those who buy the regular edition of the game won’t be able to play it on Day 1, they’ll have to upgrade to the Gold or Ultimate editions which cost at least $30 more.

Exclusive DLC is hardly uncommon, but it generally comes later after tha main game is built. Putting missions behind paywalls from the first day, especially on single player games, has understandably angered the fanbase.

It got bad enough that Ubisoft has now issued a statement in response to IGN with a spokesperson saying:

“To clarify. Jabba the Hutt and the Hutt Cartel are one of the main syndicates in Star Wars Outlaws and will be part of the experience for everyone who purchases the game, regardless of edition. The ‘Jabba’s Gambit’ mission is an optional, additional mission with the Hutt Cartel along Kay and Nix’s journey across the Outer Rim. This mission will be available to those who purchase the season pass or an edition of the game which includes the season pass.”

In the mission, the game’s protagonist Kay Vess receives a message from Jabba the Hutt. She learns that droid crew member ND-5 owes Jabba a favor and she must complete a special mission to free him of that burden.

“Star Wars: Outlaws” is scheduled to be released in August.
