The second season of FX’s “Shōgun” has wrapped filming in Canada after eight months of production (shooting began in January). Justin Marks returns as showrunner.
The show’s core stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are reprising their respective roles of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, as are a lot of the surviving first-season cast.
The first season adapted James Clavell’s novel fully and is set in 1600s Japan where Lord Toranaga finds himself at war with his enemies as the Council of Regents unites against him. His situation becomes even more complicated when a mysterious European ship is discovered abandoned in a nearby fishing village.
The second season is set ten years later, but plot specifics are under wraps. Marks previously teased the new run will take the show’s tone in an unexpected direction with more romance against the backdrop of war.
Returnees include Fumi Nikaidô, Ren Meguro, Asami Mizukawa, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Yûko Miyamoto, Yuka Kouri, Tommy Bastow, Jun Kunimura, Yoriko Dôguchi, Eita Okuno and Takaaki Enoki.
Joining them are Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi and Takashi Yamaguchi.
The first season won a record-breaking 18 Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, making the epic historical drama the first-ever mostly non-English-language series to claim the prize.
