The second season of the Jamie Dornan-led thriller series “The Tourist,” which was abandoned by its first season’s U.S. distributor Max, has been picked up for that market by Netflix.
In addition, Netflix U.S. has also secured rights to the show’s six-episode first season, which will arrive on the service on February 1st, ahead of the second season’s debut on February 29th.
“The Fall” and “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar” actor Dornan plays a Northern Irish man who is driving across the Australian outback and wakes up in a hospital with amnesia. He must use what few clues he has to discover his identity before his past catches up with him.
The first season scored very good reviews (97% on RT, 81 on MC) with high praise for Dornan and co-star Danielle Macdonald’s performances. It also performed well when it launched in January last year, the premiere nabbing 8.7 million UK viewers on BBC One and doing strong business on Stan in Australia.
However the series underperformed for Max, who co-produced the first season, and so they opted to no longer produce or distribute the second season.
The second season finds Dornan’s memory-challenged character Elliot and Macdonald’s Probationary Constable Helen Chambers heading to Ireland as Elliott attempts to rediscover his roots. He’s quickly dragged into his past life, with dire consequences.
Filming already took place back in April in Dublin with Diarmaid Murtagh, Conor MacNeill, Olwen Fouéré, Francis Magee, Mark McKenna and Nessa Matthews co-starring.
