A former BioWare developer, who worked on the first few “Mass Effect” games, says he’s confident the next game can be great, assuming nobody interferes with the creative team.
At last report back in November last year, executive producer Mike Gamble said the fifth title in the series remains very active – despite the fact that the first teaser for the game was released way back in December 2020. He claimed, “the team is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect”.
No real updates since then. Speaking with FRVR recently, “Mass Effect 2” lead cinematic designer Armando Troisi was asked if he could offer any advice for the BioWare staff working on the next game in the series.
He said that because many of the core team on the new game is now the same team behind the original titles, there’s little he can offer as they know what they’re doing:
“It’s hard for me to say [any advice] because a lot of people that are on that project were there [for the originals]. I don’t think that I can give them any more advice than they already have. They know this stuff.”
In a nod to the mess over “Dragon Age: Veilguard,” which saw BioWare being told to make it a live-service game and then changing those plans at the last minute, Troisi says it will all depend on whether certain higher-ups can steer clear and let the team cook:
“It’s one of those things where, if people get out of the way and let game creators just do their thing, you never know the magic that they can create. I think, obviously, there’s a lot of different things that come into play in making a game of that scale. But trust your people and try to change the world with everything that you try to do. And I think that they can do it. I’m rooting for them.
The vision was always clear. There was a BioWare formula and they were going to iterate on that formula and keep turning out best-in-class cinematic RPGs and that’s basically what the mandate was. And then they had to live through the live service era – which is still happening but is maybe not as prevalent – and we’re all beholden to companies and stakeholders and all the rest of that.
I think BioWare, when they break it down and do that single-player, interactive, narrative-driven, deep combat, progression-driven game, really, there’s nobody that can touch them. It’s kind of like the [Master] Chief [from Halo], it’s like going on a walkabout and finding themselves and coming back. I think BioWare can do it if we just leave them alone to do what they do best.”
The new game comes after the original trilogy, which was released from 2007-2012 and received much acclaim. In 2017 came the spin-off “Mass Effect: Andromeda” which was famously problematic, with the team forced to use the Frostbite engine, a procedural scope that proved impossible, and a major reboot halfway through development that meant the game was effectively pushed out over a brutal 18-month crunch cycle.
