At last update a few weeks back, 20th Century Studios was still seeking a director to take over from Fede Alvarez to helm the proposed follow-up to “Alien: Romulus”.
Alvarez was in pre-production on the sequel, which he and Rodo Sayagues had been co-writing, when he suddenly exited the project in early September last year as director – though would remain aboard as producer.
Rumours swirled last year was that Alvarez wanted to use Michael Fassbender’s David character, and producer Ridley Scott said ‘no’ because Scott indicated he “may want to come back to the series” and use that character.
Sebastien Vanicek (“Evil Dead Burn”) was then approached, but talks with him fell apart. Now, World of Reel reports that according to their source, the ‘Romulus’ sequel has been “indefinitely shelved and might not ever happen”.
Specifically, they indicated that Alvarez’s exit “sent the entire project into a tailspin” and that “there is currently no path forward for the sequel”.
We also know that Brian Duffield, who writes and directs the upcoming “Whalefall,” is currently writing a wholly different “Alien” film the studio is keen on. Meanwhile, ‘Romulus’ stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson have got other major gigs coming up shortly.
