The first full trailer for Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday” reportedly amassed a jaw-dropping 503 million views in 24 hours according to Variety.
That makes it the second-biggest movie trailer launch of all time, behind only Sony’s Marvel film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” at 719 million views.
That’s not the only record it broke. It was also easily Disney’s most-viewed trailer in history, surpassing “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which had 365 million views – a number boosted by including the Super Bowl broadcast.
It also surpassed the release of the “Grand Theft Auto VI” trailer in May, which pulled in 475 million views.
The trailer was released at the same time pre-sales for the film went online, or more specifically only the pre-sales for the non-IMAX ‘InfinityVision’ premium screens showing the film.
These cinemas, which domestically make up around 1,000 screens of the film’s expected 4,000-screen opening weekend footprint, reportedly generated $16.5 million in advance ticket sales after the first day of availability.
Showtimes for premium formats on both opening day and previews the night before are already largely sold out while exhibitors are reportedly adding more screenings for Christmas Day and beyond.
To give you an idea of how impressive that pre-sale number is, the number is twice as high as the first-day pre-sales figures for “Deadpool & Wolverine” across all screens. That film launched to $211 million and ended its run with $1.3 billion.
“Avengers: Endgame” had the largest opening weekend of all time with $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally – before going on to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time with $2.7 billion.
Combined with “Dune: Part Three” opening the same day in an event dubbed ‘Dunesday’, the December 18th weekend is expected to potentially be the single biggest collective weekend in box office history – surpassing the $402 million collective total made in the weekend ‘Endgame’ opened.
