Last year saw sci-fi/horror video game classic “Dead Space” get an acclaimed remake, the game rebuilt from the ground up in the Frostbite engine by EA’s Motive Studio.

The remake was widely praised, landing an 89/100 for the console and 87/100 for the PC version whilst original game creator Glen Schofield praised the remake for being ‘faithful’ to his original. It was also the second best-selling game of January 2023.

The hope was EA would continue with a remake of “Dead Space 2” but there have been no updates until this week. Earlier in the week came the news that Motive Studio was being shifted to work on content for the next “Battlefield” game alongside DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect.

That begged the obvious question, so what about the “Dead Space 2” remake? Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb reported on Wednesday:

“They were working on Dead Space 2, and they are no longer working on it. It is on the shelf because the first game had lacklustre sales, is how it was phrased to me. So if you were looking forward to Dead Space 2, it’s straight up bad news.

Does this mean it never happens? I don’t know if that’s the case, but as it stands right now, they were working on it. It was in the concepting phase I believe, it was in pre-production. And now that work has been put on the shelf and they are done with it, and this studio is now making Iron Man and Battlefield.”

EA then officially responded to Grubb’s claims, with a spokesperson telling IGN:

“We don’t normally comment on rumors but there is no validity to this story.”

Grubb then responded to that response, sticking to his original sources and saying the project was in development but is now dead:

“I give you my permission to believe EA if you want, but whenever a company says ‘that isn’t true’ but they don’t specify which part of the story they are talking about, well … yeah. Dead Space 2 was definitely being planned. It had a code name. And they aren’t making it now.”

Philippe Ducharme and Roman Campos-Oriola, who were key execs on the “Dead Space” remake, are now focused on “Battlefield” according to Motive GM Patrick Klaus who also confirmed their planned “Iron Man” game is still in development.
