Hot on the heels of its announcement as the opening feature at the Venice Film Festival, Netflix has snagged U.S. and Latin American rights to filmmaker Danny Boyle’s “Ink”.

Studiocanal handled worldwide sales and will release the film theatrically in their territories including UK, much of Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Netflix is taking essentially everywhere else.

Jack O’Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy star in the film, which is based on the Tony-nominated stage play by James Graham (“Dear England”) who also wrote the screenplay.

Set in 1969, the film charts the story of how upcoming Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch (Pearce) and tabloid editor Larry Lamb (O’Connell) launched The Sun newspaper.

Murdoch intends to make it a must-read news source and hires Lamb to run the paper. The acquisition would start a long-standing rivalry between The Sun and The Mirror, leading to the rise of the modern British tabloids and everything that followed in its wake from Murdoch-owned Fox News, to clickbait news and social media platforms.

Boyle directs and produces alongside Tessa Ross, Tracey Seaward and Michael Ellenberg.
