Before its release in 2016, Hello Games’ procedurally generated sci-fi epic “No Man’s Sky” drew major attention for its ambition with many keen to play.
Upon release, it received mixed reviews and became a cautionary tale about how not to market a video game and the dangers of over-promising.
Then something remarkable happened – developers continued to improve and expand the game, adding a ton of free updates over the past seven years.
This content added all new features and made others better – finally achieving and then surpassing the original vision for the game and turning around the industry’s perception of the title into one of admiration.
Now the Hello Games team are back and used last night’s The Game Awards to announce their new fantasy theme title “Light No Fire”. Hello Games’ founder Sean Murray says:
“What people don’t know is that for the past five years we’ve been working on something new, something very different, something maybe more ambitious.
For No Man’s Sky we generated a whole universe of sparse-looking alien planets, and that wasn’t easy, but there’s something that’s much harder that we wanted to do. For our new game, we want to create an Earth, something that’s varied, a planet that’s as varied as a universe.
Something bigger than Earth, something with real mountains – not video game mountains but mountains that are miles high, taller than Everest, that when you climb on top of them and look out you can see rivers, and canyons, and continents, and oceans.
The first real open world, something without boundaries, and we’re going to let everyone play in it together. We’re super nervous but really excited. If people like it, this is a game I’d like to still be updating 10 years from now.”
The official description of the title says it’s “a game about adventure, building, survival, and exploration together. It’s also expected to “have the depth of a role playing game and the freedom of a survival sandbox”.
As the title is still in development, there’s no word on a potential release date beyond something obviously quite a while away.
