Out promoting his roles in the just-released “Enola Holmes 3” and the upcoming “The Odyssey,” British actor Himesh Patel spoke about a project he just recently shot – the Ryan Coogler-directed pilot for a revival/semi-reboot of “The X-Files”.
Speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Patel confirmed the pilot has completed filming and says it was “very, very special” and all the cast and crew “await a decision” from Disney & Hulu if they will proceed to series.
He and Danielle Deadwyler star as the two leads in the new series, and he revealed that while he was a bit too young to appreciate the show growing up, it meant a lot to his mother:
“I think I was maybe three or so when it first started, so a little young to be watching it. I seem to remember my mom sort of telling me things, though. She would like to tell me stories about, ‘I watched a show, and this thing happened,’ and I’d be like, ‘It’s weird.’”
Asked if Coogler’s take addresses more contemporary anxieties, Patel says it certainly updates the premise a bit:
“You really do come to understand the responsibility of it, and the power of it as a world. It’s obviously a contemporary show that I think is of its time. Ryan and his whole team and myself and Danielle were all very aligned in that way, that we love depth. We love everything to have a meaningful context, and, much the same as a lot of great filmmakers like Chris [Nolan], Ryan believes that the audience is intelligent. And he wants to give them as much richness of tapestry as he can. So, yeah, hopefully people will see it.”
Patel was also in Amazon’s recent “Bait” series and has the animated musical comedy “High in the Clouds” on the way.
