After 29 Years of anarchy, South Park changes its name to South America

Imitation is often called the sincerest form of flattery, making today’s South Park news quite laudatory. Following their Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program after 29 years, South Park is making a big change and renaming the show South America.

According to creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone:

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation.”

Season 29 Release Date and Streaming Schedule

The 29th Season of the award-winning series will premiere on Wednesday, September 16, at 10 pm ET/PT on Comedy Central. New episodes will be available to stream on Paramount+ worldwide, with next-day availability in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Additional new episodes will premiere on Wednesdays: September 30, October 14, October 28, November 11, and November 25.

Taking Aim at Recent Headlines

While Parker and Stone credit the “bravery and patriotism” of Apple and Google for inspiring the rebrand, the title change is clearly a direct shot at President Donald Trump, who, in a controversial move, renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America. Many across the globe have chosen to ignore Trump’s decree, referring to the landmasses by their original names.

30 Years of Irreverence

Meanwhile, South Park is nearing its 30th anniversary, which is positively mindblowing. I still remember where I was when I watched the debut episode, “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe,” and the groundswell of fandom that happened shortly thereafter. Following its premiere, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone in a South Park t-shirt or hearing someone shout, “You killed Kenny, you bastards!” at the top of their lungs. Yes, we were young, dumb, and starving for attention. At the time, South Park felt taboo, like you were getting away with something by watching it. Parents fretted over the show’s mature language and subject matter, while celebrities and politicians feared becoming the show’s next target. It’s incredible to think South Park has been thriving for almost three decades without losing any of its sting or credibility.
