Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” held onto the top spot at the box-office in its second weekend, the title estimated to pull in $70 million domestically and a further $89.1 million overseas by the end of today
That will bring the film’s worldwide total to a stunning $585 million after just ten days. Its domestic haul is a 56% drop from last weekend, a number on par with that of “Incredibles 2”, and analysts now estimate the film will be the franchise’s most successful entry to date.
As a result, Warners & DC’s “Supergirl” flew into second place, which is coming in below projections. The title is now reportedly headed for a $38 million domestic opening weekend – a far cry from the $50+ million suggestions of a few weeks ago.
Its number is just a few $100,000 more than the debut of the disastrous “Joker: Folie a Deux” ($37.6 million) and behind Marvel’s lowest starter “The Marvels” at $46.1 million.
“Obsession” held onto third with a further $9.8 million domestically – bringing its total to $234 million and surpassing “The Exorcist” to become the sixth highest-grossing horror film of all time in the United States. Fourth was “Jackass: Best and Last” which debuted to $8.4 million, indicating that franchise’s glory days are long over.
“Disclosure Day” rounded out the top five with $7.8 million – a drop of 56% in its third weekend. Overall domestic box-office for the first half of this year is up 15% on last year and just 9% off the record pre-pandemic high of 2019.
Also of note is “Michael” which has now surpassed “Oppenheimer” to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time.
