Barging into U.S. cinemas on a wave of universal acclaim, Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One” has been a smash – landing an A CinemaScore and an impressive $11 million in its opening weekend box-office.
That’s the biggest opening ever in the U.S. for a live-action Japanese film and majorly overperformed expectations. In comparison, Toho’s “Shin Godzilla” made just $1.9 million in its entire run in the U.S. back in 2016.
As a result of that success, Toho has changed its original plans for a single-week run to end on December 7th and will now extend the film’s run for at least another week through December 14th. New showtimes have already started to pop up on ticketing sites.
The story unfolds in an already devastated post-war Japan where the kaiju goes on a rampage. Takashi Yamazaki, who handled the visual effects on “Shin Godzilla,” writes and directs this outing.
The film has pulled in a superb 97% from critics and 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and is frequently being called the best “Godzilla” film made in the past few decades.
Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki star in the film which comes alongside the currently airing “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” series on the Apple TV+ service.
