By The actor’s guild SAG-AFTRA has officially ratified and approved their deal with the studios – ending any further industrial action for the next several years.
The 160,000-strong member’s guild required a majority vote of 50% + 1 of ballots to ratify the new deal. The union has revealed that 78.33% of ballots were cast in favor of the November 8th tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
That’s a number higher than expected due to the noise still swirling around issues like artificial intelligence. In previous years such as 2020 and 2017, a mid-70s approval score was also reached.
The vote was held yesterday by SAG-AFTRA members on the new contract on Tuesday. It closes the book on the 118 day strike – even as many productions have already returned to work as permitted by SAG-AFTRA last month.
Approximately 38.15% of members voted this time around – much higher than the 27.2% of 2020 and just 15.3% of 2017. The new agreement expires June 30th 2026.
The impact of this strike has affected the entire industry with thousands of jobs and billions of economic dollars lost, and a release schedule that is expected to remain something of a mess for the next year or so.
