“Outlander” Star Joins Cuaron’s “Ascension”

Caitriona Balfe, best known for playing the female lead Claire on Starz’s long-running drama series “Outlander,” is teaming with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón on the Apple TV series “Ascension”.

Inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel “Last Days,” the one-hour psychological horror thriller follows Rose (Balfe), a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother.

She’s brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own. When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath.

Marking Balfe’s return to television since “Outlander” ended, the project hails from Apple Studios and Anonymous Content, and it falls under Cuarón’s deal with Apple. Balfe not only stars but is also executive producing.

The series will be co-showrun by Natalie Erika James and Christian White (“Apartment 7A,” “Relic”), who co-wrote the show with Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón. James will also serve as lead director and all four will executive produce.

Gabriela Rodriguez, Richard Schwartz, Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden executive produce.
