20th Century Studios is reportedly still in search of a director for the proposed follow-up to “Alien: Romulus,” according to The InSneider (via WOR).
Fede Alvarez was in pre-production on the sequel when he suddenly exited the project in early September last year.
Both Cailee Spaeny as ‘Rain’ Carradine and David Jonsson as Andy were expected to return for the follow-up, which Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues had been writing since the first film opened.
That month, Alvarez confirmed the film’s script is finished, and he’s going to “pass the torch on this one as director,” but would stay on as producer alongside Ridley Scott.
A week later, he added that he didn’t think he was ever going to direct the ‘Romulus’ follow-up. That was all we heard until the report today.
This new one indicates that “Evil Dead Burn director Sebastien Vanicek was more recently approached for the gig, but talks with him fell apart. For now, it sounds like no one is attached.
A rumour last year was that Alvarez wanted to use Michael Fassbender’s David character, and Scott said “no” because the original “Alien” director said he “may want to come back to the series” and use that character, which he created. That was never confirmed.
