Idris Elba’s name was frequently linked with the role of James Bond around the end of the 2010’s. He aged out of contention as Daniel Craig became the longest serving 007.
Recent comments seem to indicate that he’s made peace with this.
While doing press for Masters of the Universe and in an interview with GQ he said his name first started to be linked following Barack Obama’s election in 2008.
Despite his name being linked for a long time, Elba told the magazine:
“It was never legit. It was always just a rumor.”
He went on to say that, no matter who plays him, the character is the character and should remain that way, accepting his ethnicity could have been a barrier:
“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, I think, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that.
Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.
Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
Casting director Nina Gold (Game of Thrones) is the current casting director tasked with filling that role, and a new man is expected to be confirmed in the tuxedo before the end of this year.
