Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is reportedly headed for a global debut of $160 million in its opening weekend – essentially matching its $165 million budget.

Current projections are around half/half for domestic/international, with $80 million from each. On the latter front, all markets but Korea get the film this week.

That start is ahead of “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” a film that garnered $155 million worldwide in its debut over the 2018 Memorial Day weekend.

It’s certainly not the worst post-COVID Memorial Day weekend – that was 2024 when “Furiosa” debuted to $32.3 million domestically.

Domestic pre-sales for the film are reportedly at $25 million, in line with “Project Hail Mary” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” which both opened in the $80+ million range. The film will also have an exclusive three-week play in IMAX.

The film’s only real competition in terms of newcomers is Boots Riley’s satirical comedy “I Love Boosters” and André Øvredal’s horror “Passenger” – both of which are expected to get in the high single-digit millions.
