There is going to be a lot of this in the coming weeks, so we had better strap in. A lot of what? A lot of names being floated like balloons as a potential new James Bond, but it’s an important part of the process.

Here is how it really works…

The role of Bond, and specifically the auditions for it, are somewhat infamous in the world of acting in that, if you talk about it, it’s gone! Start showing up on chat shows talking about your audition, and that you are waiting to hear, then it won’t be you.

Confirm you have been asked to audition, you won’t be called back.

Your agent starts manoeuvring at dinner parties, dropping details on where you are in the process, and your agent has just cost you the gig.

The names who made it onto the very final shortlist don’t usually come out until many, many years after the casting. Even then, they are frequently wrong in many reports.

So when a name gets out when the process is underway then understand this. It is deliberate.

The name is out there because they want the name out there because the producers liked them the test went well, and they are floating a balloon to gauge reaction. It’s part of the plan.

With this in mind, comes the news that a hitherto unmentioned name is confirmed to have been auditioned – Tom Francis.

Who?

He’s a 26-year-old British stage actor who just won the Olivier Award for his performance alongside Nicole Scherzinger in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard.

On the screen, he appeared in You for Netflix, and George Clooney’s Jay Kelly. He will shortly be in Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl.

His name, and his audition, has been confirmed by Variety, so we all know what that means.

Right profile, right age, right career stage. So this tracks.

Remember this in the next few weeks as names start to fly around all over the place. If they are being openly confirmed as having auditioned by reputable, connected outlets and the name is out there, it is for these reasons.

They, and we, are being tested.
