Sunday morning’s numbers are in and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is coming in ahead of expectations – the title now on track to earn $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide in its opening weekend.
The film has broken a slew of records as previously reported including the best domestic opening this year so far, best opening for Matt Damon, best opening for a opening for a Universal R-rated movie and the fourth best R-rated domestic opening behind only the three “Deadpool” films.
Its $139.6 million overseas debut is Nolan’s biggest international opening to date, and the second best international start for an R-rated film behind only “Deadpool and Wolverine”. It also was Universal’s biggest opening to date in 11 markets and biggest Nolan opening in 48.
IMAX alone pulled in $51.8 million for screenings of the film with $29.6 million of that from North American IMAX cinemas.
Universal said in a statement this morning: “Incredibly rewarding to see the palpable excitement in theatres this weekend with the release of The Odyssey. Once again, Christopher Nolan has crafted an epic adventure on a scale rarely seen as audiences respond with not only tremendous results at the box office, but with reactions to the film that are beyond stellar.”
Elsewhere, “Moana” came in second domestically with $19 million, down 56% in its second week. Most others fell along expected lines with “Evil Dead Burn” seeing the biggest tumble of 64% in its second weekend down to $5 million.
