What is it about golf as a drama that makes it strangely, hypnotically watchable, while at the same time lending itself so well to movies and TV shows?
The recent Stick on Apple TV+ was rather wonderful, and Happy Gilmore remains hilarious, with Happy Gilmore 2 being way better than it had any right to be.
Golf in real life is a tremendous sport to watch on TV, but the kind of people you meet on a golf course, along with the clothes you have to wear, mean that Caddyshack is as close to the lifestyle as any sane human being would want to get.
Still, it remains fertile ground, especially for comedy with heart, so Netflix and Will Ferrell are going all in.
Netflix has premiered the teaser trailer for The Hawk, a pro-golf based comedy series.
In the series, Lonnie Hawkins (Ferrell), 2004’s number one golfer, struggles in the latter stages of his career to recapture his glory days. His ex-wife and his son Lance, golfing’s new golden boy, know he’s through.
But with one more major to win to complete golf’s Grand Slam, Lonnie refuses to believe he’s anything other than one stroke away from the greatest comeback in the sport’s history.
Series co-stars are Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby.
Executive producers include Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, Alix Taylor, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Nena Rodriguez, Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green, and Andrew Guest.
The series was shot with the co-operation of the PGA Tour, so expect some fun cameos.
The Hawk will debut on Netflix on July 16th.
