Hot off the news this morning he’s playing Michael Jackson’s father in Antoine Fuqua’s “Michael,” Oscar nominee Colman Domingo has signed on for another role.

Domingo is set to play legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote. In addition, he will make his feature directing debut on the project.

Domingo has reportedly been working on the project on the quiet for the past few years. What’s not clear is what period or events in Cole’s life will be focused on.

One of the most popular and influential musicians of the 20th century, he recorded over 100 chart-topping songs and sold over 50 million records – his most famous songs including “Unforgettable” and “Smile”.

Domingo previously co-wrote a play titled “Lights Out” which premiered at the Geffen Playhouse. That play looked at what happened in Cole’s mind during his 1957 Christmas special – the first network program hosted by an African American.

Domingo is coming off a hot streak with his lead role in “Rustin” landing an Oscar nomination, and a supporting role in “The Color Purple”. He’ll soon be seen in Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls,” will shoot the third season of “Euphoria” soon, and is coming off Sundance success as executive producer of the horror film “It’s What’s Inside” which just sold to Netflix for $17 million.
