The debut of “Mortal Kombat II” and the second weekend of “The Devil Wears Prada 2” are both battling for the top spot at the box-office this weekend.

Both titles are expected to pull in $40+ million for the three-day period domestically and are doing well overseas – not bad for what are essentially ‘mid-budget’ films at $80 million and $100 million respectively.

Both look likely to finish in profit at the box-office, ‘Prada’ in fact could hit that mark this weekend, so it’s understandable there’s already talk of third entries in their respective franchises.

First up, ‘Prada’ director David Frankel tells Variety that he’s not ruling out the possibility of another one:

“Look, it took us 20 years to do this one. And I said, ‘Never again,’ and here we are. So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again,’ again. Let’s see what happens. If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it.”

Meanwhile, ‘Kombat’ director Simon McQuoid tells EW that the way the current film ends, with a kind of ‘mission statement’ laid out by the survivors of what they intend to do next, was a deliberate choice and he’s open to plenty more:

“We knew how we were ending this film. You don’t want to be overly confident. I never want to be cocky about how anything’s going to land or play. You think about it, and you theorise it….There’s so much to draw from, and that’s both overwhelming and really exciting. There’s always a, ‘What about that character?’ It never really stops.”

Critical reviews for both films have been mixed with ‘Prada’ taking the edge, that’s also been reflected in the CinemaScores from audiences with the ‘Prada’ sequel getting a solid A- and the ‘Kombat’ one getting a ‘B’.

Both films are expected to stay atop the box-office through next weekend as well, before “The Mandalorian & Grogu” arrives for the Memorial Day U.S. holiday.
