Former “Stranger Things” star David Harbour has scored a key role in the upcoming young Rambo movie “John Rambo” at Lionsgate and Millennium Media.

The project, which was shot in Thailand from January through to March, sees Noah Centineo (“The Recruit,” “Street Fighter”) starring in a story set during the Vietnam War, years before the events of “First Blood,” with Rambo a soldier fighting a war in the jungle.

Harbour will take on the role of Major Sam Trautman, Rambo’s commanding officer. The late Richard Crenna played the part across the original trilogy in the 1980s, the character one of the only people who could talk John Rambo down.

“Sisu” helmer Jalmari Helander directs the project from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (“Black Adam,” “The Mauritanian”) with Templeton Media and the Russo brothers’ AGBO also behind the project.

Kevin King Templeton, Les Weldon, Jonathan Yunger, Angela Russo-Otstot and Michael Disco produce, while Sylvester Stallone and Anthony and Joe Russo executive produce.

Harbour is coming off an acclaimed turn in HBO’s “DTF St. Louis” and has “Violent Night 2” and “Avengers: Doomsday” on the way.
