Amazon MGM Studios has announced plans for a live-action film based on the beloved 1992 animated feature “FernGully: The Last Rainforest”.

Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Christian Slater, and Samantha Mathis were among the stars of the original film, which is set in an Australian rainforest populated by fairies, one of whom accidentally shrinks a logger to fairy size.

They band together to protect the rainforest from other loggers and an evil pollution entity named Hexxus. The film was famously, and rather blatantly, environmental in its messaging and fared well enough to generate a direct-to-video sequel.

Elton John, Sheena Easton, Tone Loc, Raffi, Curry, Williams and Jimmy Buffett all contributed songs to the feature.

Marielle Heller (“Nightbitch,” “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) is set to direct from her own script. Stacey Sher, Susan Ursitti‑Sheinberg, Jon Sheinberg, Matt Feige, Heller and Leah Holzer will produce.

Heller most recently became attached to the Tom Hanks-led baseball film “The Comebacker” at Sony Pictures.
