Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Project Hail Mary” saw a drop of just 18% on Saturday, pushing its domestic opening weekend estimate up to $80.6 million.
The Ryan Gosling-led space feature additionally pulled in a further $60 million overseas, pushing the title up to a $141 million worldwide opening.
That’s easily the best of the year so far, the biggest debut for an Amazon MGM Studios feature, the best opening for a non-franchise movie in March, and the second-best domestic start for a non-franchise movie after “Oppenheimer”.
It’s also the best opening for Lord & Miller as directors, and Gosling’s second-best worldside behind only “Barbie” at $162 million.
The four-hour Hindi movie “Dhurandhar: The Revenge” and horror comedy “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” are taking second and third domestically with $9.5 million and $9.1 million respectively.
The latter is seen as a disappointing number with many either not keen on a sequel, or happy to wait for it to hit streaming. That could also be seen overseas where it pulled in just $2.8 million for a global start of $11.9 million.
In limited release, Sofia Coppola’s first documentary “Marc by Sofia” pulled in a $23,400 per screen average on two screens.
