DC Studios and HBO have premiered the official trailer for its “Lanterns” series as a panel for the show is underway at San Diego Comic Con.
In the comics and series, Green Lanterns are intergalactic peacekeepers who wear rings that give them extraordinary powers.
The series follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they investigate a murder in Rushville, Nebraska, which Jordan believes is an extraterrestrial incident and leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.
Set within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, the tone is akin to “True Detective” and other gritty dramas the network is known for. The series takes place across two different points in the timeline – 2016 and 2026.
Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country”) is showrunner and executive producer and writes the series with Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and comic book scribe Tom King (“Supergirl”).
Along with Chandler and Pierre, the series also stars Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardener, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.
“Lanterns” releases on HBO on August 16th.
