Warner Bros. Pictures’ musical film “Wonka” has hit short-term tracking this morning with industry projections now being revised upwards to $35-40 million for its domestic opening weekend.
That’s on par with another pre-Christmas family film title, namely Sony’s hit “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” which opened to $36 million, and is likely one of the biggest openings for the coming month.
It’s also well above the earlier estimates for the movie which pegged it as having a domestic weekend opening of around $20-25 million.
The stats also indicate that the Timothee Chalamet-led film is strongly on the radar of women of all ages right now with ‘unaided awareness’ for women at this point ahead of release reportedly on par with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
The film, directed by “Paddington” director Paul King, began screening to the media this past week and has a world premiere set for November 28th in London.
The most recent adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the Tim Burton-directed 2005 film, opened to $56.1 million in the United States.
