Earliest tracking figures for Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s “Project Hail Mary” have arrived, with the film projected to have a major start at the box-office.
The $150 million-budgeted film opens on March 20th and is reportedly heading for a $50 million domestic opening weekend. It is being pegged as the first four-quadrant movie (men/women/young/old) to hit cinemas since “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” with high interest among all demos.
Only seven titles have opened above $40 million domestically at the box-office that have been non-sequels – one of them being “The Martian” which debuted to $54.3 million and was similarly based on an Andy Weir novel.
“Project Hail Mary”has begun screening for press, and while reviews aren’t out yet, the reactions so far have been raves with a lot of praise for Gosling’s performance and for the film’s quality overall.
Also opening the same weekend is Radio Silence’s “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” which is currently on track for a $11+ million debut. Searchlight is reportedly confident enough in the film’s quality that early screenings are already underway.
The first film cost just $6 million to make, debuted to $8 million and went on to make $28 million domestically and $57.1 million worldwide.
