Beloved acting icon Sir Ian McKellen may have let slip a small spoiler for the upcoming Marvel Studios title “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Sitting down with Jake’s Takes for a 30-minute career retrospective interview, the conversation at one point naturally turned to McKellen’s portrayal of Magneto in the “X-Men” films and the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Asked about some of his favourite moments as the character, McKellen talked about some of the key bits from the films where he got to use his powers, including the Golden Gate Bridge sequence in “X-Men: The Last Stand” and the scene with the police in the first film.

It was after that he dropped the spoiler. Whether it was a genuine slip, or McKellen doing a brief “I, Claudius” style misdirection – only he knows. He said:

“A favourite time was when I detached the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco from its moorings and was sailing it through the air towards Alcatraz. That was magical because they’d built the bridge in the open air, and I was on it, and the wind machine was blowing, and I was just doing that. Over the loudspeaker, the director – not Bryan this time – was saying ‘more, Ian, more,’ and eventually had to shout ‘less and less,’ but it was all basically that.

And in the first film, I remember the camera behind me, my hands raised up, and as they did that, two police cars in front of me were raised up by cranes. When I, at a signal, dropped my hands, the cars dropped. These were not special effects.

Nowadays, I think things will become a little bit easier, though. I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oh, I perhaps shouldn’t have said that.”

He’s not the only one, either. Josh Gad, poking fun at the in-canon MCU events of his one-episode appearance in “Wonder Man,” did a post on Instagram promising that “Josh Gad will return in Avengers: Doomsday”.

Meanwhile, photos of merchandise for the film were on display at a recent event at London’s Pinewood Studios, a comic book cover revealing a look at the movie’s main cast members – no sign of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers on said cover.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit cinemas on December 18th 2026.
