A couple of years before “Heated Rivalry” became the buzziest show on the air, there was another hit screen adaptation of a best-selling novel about two guys from different countries who fall in love and conduct a secret love affair.
That was “Red, White & Royal Blue,” a 2023 film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestseller in which the adult son (Taylor Zakhar Perez) of the U.S. President (Uma Thurman), and a Prince from the UK (Nicholas Galitzine) whose rivalry causes a major uproar at a wedding.
The two are forced to play up their non-existent friendship with a goodwill visit to the UK in a PR tour that turns into an actual romance.
In less than a week, the film joined the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time on Prime Video, was the streamer’s top-watched film worldwide for three weeks running, and led to a “huge surge in new Prime membership signups”.
A sequel was quickly greenlit, and now production has officially kicked off on the sequel, with Perez and Galitzine posting from the set. Galitzine is coming off his role as He-Man in “Masters of the Universe” opening this Summer.
The pair make it clear the wedding isn’t for their characters but Princess Beatrice (Ellie Bamber), the supportive younger sister of Galitzine’s Henry.
Only three actors are confirmed returnees so far – the two male leads and Sarah Shahi (“Paradise,” “Person of Interest”), who had a highly quotable role as Zahra Bankston, the long-suffering PR clean-up guru and U.S. Deputy Chief of Staff.
Matthew López returns to pen the script with McQuiston co-writing. López, Michael McGrath, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will produce the film.
