Beloved movies. John Hughes classics. Great fun. They still stand up today. All of these things could be said about the first two Home Alone movies, that captured family film lightning in a bottle.

The first movie made a global child superstar of Macaulay Culkin. It got him to a point where, after a contained career, he never had to work again.

In a Q&A session at the A Nostalgic Night event, Culkin revealed that not only would he be open to the idea of a legacy sequel, but that he has a pitch.

He is quoted in Variety as saying:

“[I] wouldn’t be completely allergic… It would have to be just right.”

He gave some details on his pitch. One that essentially reverses his role and would make him the “intruder” of the piece, in a role as a single parent:

“I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard, and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me, and then I get locked out.

[Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me. The house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship. [Kevin has to] get let back into [his] son’s heart.”

Director Chris Columbus had previously said that the first two movies were so perfect that he couldn’t hope to recapture it, so he is not keen to return.

I think a role for the Wet Bandits would need to be found in order for things to work.
