The old adage says to strike while the iron is hot. What if that iron is cold? Stone cold? The temperature of said iron is of no concern to Paramount Skydance, clearly. The Star Trek iron might have been allowed to cool, with several aborted movie attempts and a number of shows of questionable quality, but that won’t stop an Ellison.
The trailer for the latest effort, Starfleet Academy, felt like an ad for some kind of therapy self-help group… in space. So any thinking that might see the current iteration of Trek killed stone dead is to be cautiously welcomed, right?
It was rumored that the new owners of Paramount wanted to move at speed with some new Star Trek. They were not joking, and they clearly have no intention of standing on ceremony. The new bosses are showing their hand.
Deadline reports that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have been set to write, produce and direct the new Star Trek film. The pair were behind 2018’s Game Night and 2023’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is way, way better than it had any right to be.
They also wrote the script for Spider-Man: Homecoming. So where will they start? According to the report, this is:
“…a completely new take in the Star Trek universe and is not connected to any previous or current television series, movie, or prior movie development projects.”
David Ellison had confirmed on an earnings call that the Kelvin-verse of JJ Abrams was dead. Well, didn’t Abrams’ star fall rapidly in Hollywood?
So new actors to play new characters and new adventures. By the time new Star Trek makes it to the big screen, it will have been over a decade since the last movie.
