James Gunn’s follow-up to Superman was placed onto a fast track following the reception of the DCU launching first movie. Man of Tomorrow will shoot next year for a 2027 release, just a two-year gap, with Supergirl dropping in between.
Speculation has been rife about who will be the antagonist in the movie. Gunn has already confirmed that David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. This time around, the two adversaries will have to find some common ground and a way to work together as they are faced with a greater threat than either of them imagined.
So, of course, the smart money is on the villain being Brainiac. Now, a new casting update has been shared via Nexus Point News that may support that.
Their report says heavy makeup and prosthetics will be used for the role, and that actors will require a strong build and stature. It is a shame that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson probably burned his bridges with DC following the Black Adam coup attempt, as he would probably have been perfect for the role.
Created by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino, Brainiac first appeared in Action Comics #242 (1958). He is now considered as one of Superman’s greatest enemies. He is commonly depicted as a superintelligent android from the planet Colu who is obsessed with collecting all knowledge in the known universe.
He travels the galaxy and shrinks cities to bottle size for preservation on his skull-shaped spaceship before destroying their source planets, believing the knowledge he acquires to be most valuable if he alone possesses it. Among these shrunken cities is Kandor, the capital of Superman’s home planet, Krypton.
In some versions and stories, Brainiac is responsible for Krypton’s destruction and has appeared as an AI, running Kryptonian affairs for the planet. He is regarded as one of the most dangerous threats in the DC Universe.
It is not a completely done deal. Others online have suggested Mongul as another potential villain.
Man of Tomorrow is set for release on July 9th, 2027.
