According to The Hollywood Reporter, we will soon know the identity of the new Crockett & Tubbs, and it is broadly as expected. Miami Vice is to return as a movie, this time with Top Gun: Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski behind the lens.
For this version, the studio is apparently deep in talks with Austin Butler for the co-lead role of James ‘Sonny’ Crockett. The Dune and Elvis star will take on the role originally played by Don Johnson, then Colin Farrell, in the 2006 film.
It is also confirmed that Sinners and Creed star Michael B. Jordan is in similarly in-depth talks to play on-screen partner, undercover detective Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs. Philip Michael Thomas and Jamie Foxx have previously played the character.
The script is being written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer. It is set among the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami as it follows the two detectives working undercover in the out-of-control drugs trade.
The project is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series. Michael Mann produced what became a cultural touchstone of the 1980s that today appears as a perfect time capsule of the decade.
Universal has scheduled Miami Vice for cinema release on August 6th, 2027. Filming starts in the New Year.
I can already hear the dulcet tones of Gloria Estefan…
