Fresh from an Emmy win for The Studio, Seth Rogen’s increased leverage is going to revive The Muppet Show via 20th Television for Disney.

After a well-received movie and a less well-received sequel, the Muppets were the stars of 2023’s The Muppets Mayhem series. That was cancelled, as an existential crisis over how to handle the Muppets developed among creatives. Is it really a much-loved Western cultural touchstone, or really just US-centric boomer slop? They couldn’t seem to find an answer that would satisfy anyone enough to press the “Go” button on a new series.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, The Muppet Show will return as exactly that, The Muppet Show. It will be a one-off special, to hit screens in 2026, both starring and executive produced by singer Sabrina Carpenter alongside Rogen.

Sabrina Carpenter. You know… for the kids.

The plan is that it will serve as a backdoor pilot for a new season.

Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, Michael Steinbach, Albertina Rizzo, Alex Timbers, Matt Vogel, and Eric Jacobson will executive produce. Rizzo will also write, and Timbers will direct.

Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel will perform.

The original show will also hit its 50th anniversary next year.
