Some movies scar you as a child; the end of Close Encounters had me hiding behind the sofa. Magic (1978) was another movie because of the creepy ventriloquist dummy. I still don’t trust those things, even to this day.

Whilst I’m reliving childhood nightmares about dummies, there was also Dead of Night (1945) from Ealing Studios. It’s an anthology, and one of the stories is about a ventriloquist’s doll that strangles a man. I had nightmares for a long time!

I think we can all agree that ventriloquists’ dummies are evil and not to be trusted. Magic is a classic; if you have seen it, you know what I mean. Well, it’s getting a reboot/remake/reimagining. Lionsgate is developing the reboot, with Sam Raimi producing, alongside Roy Lee, known for producing It and Weapons.

Magic starred Anthony Hopkins as Corky and was directed by Richard Attenborough. The story was:

A ventriloquist is at the mercy of his vicious dummy while he tries to renew a romance with his high school sweetheart.

The original story was by William Goldman, known for movies like All the President’s Men, Marathon Man, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and The Stepford Wives. In fact, looking at IMDb, his list of credits is very impressive.

There is no news on who is writing this reboot of Magic, but we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, I’m going to have to watch Magic and Dead of Night again to hopefully convince myself that dummies aren’t so bad.

Not scary at all, nope, all good here!
