Filmmaker Christopher Nolan says he hasn’t decided what film he’s doing next after “Oppenheimer” just yet, but whatever it is – he’s making it his own.
Whilst numerous other directors have multiple irons in the fire and leap on whatever’s ready to go, Nolan famously takes movies one at a time – never really talking up what’s next for him and devoting himself fully to the movie he’s working on.
It pays off as “Oppenheimer” was released in late July to nearly a billion in box-office worldwide. Currently playing in IMAX theaters for a one-week encore run before “The Marvels” takes over the giant format screen, the movie is finally coming to home video on November 21st.
Speaking with Variety, Nolan was asked what he would do next and if he would be open to returning to franchise filmmaking. He says right now he’s open to anything:
“Ideas come from everywhere. I’ve done a remake, I’ve made adaptations from comic books and novels, and I’ve written original screenplays. I’m open to anything.”
That said, were he offered a franchise (eg. James Bond) he would only do it if he could make the film entirely his own:
“As a writer and director, whatever I do, I have to feel like I own it completely. I have to make it original to me: The initial seed of an idea may come from elsewhere, but it has to go through my fingers on a keyboard and come out through my eyes alone.”
He was also asked if there was any lingering bad blood between him and Warner Bros. Pictures. He calls it “water under the bridge” and adds that: “Pam [Abdy] and Mike [De Luca] and [David] Zaslav, they’re trying to do some great things with that studio, which is encouraging to see.”
