More sad news, Terence Stamp, probably best known for playing General Zod in the original Superman movies, has passed away at the age of 87. There are no reports of how he died. His family made a statement to Reuters:
“He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come. We ask for privacy at this sad time.”
Born in London in 1938, Stamp attended Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. He would perform on stage in plays like The Long and the Short and the Tall, Alfie!, Dracula, and The Lady from the Sea.
Stamp made his big onscreen debut in the titular role of Peter Ustinov’s 1962 historical drama Billy Budd. This role earned him a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
He played General Zod in Superman: The Movie (1978) and then again in Superman II (1980), a role for which he is fondly remembered. Some of his other classics are Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Wall Street, Young Guns, The Real McCoy, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, The Haunted Mansion, Valkyrie, and Last Night in Soho.
Stamp also played Berndette Bassenger in Stephen Elliot’s The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (1994). This role earned him nominations for a Golden Globe and BAFTA.
Are thoughts are with is family and friends. What was your favourite Stamp movie? I’ll leave with a quote his:
“Although you have some films that are a real bummer, there’s always a film that comes up where it’s just heaven.”
