When a new Alien project was announced, in serial form, from Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley, the first thing that was known about it was that it would show the corporate machinations behind the Alien universe, revealing more about the environment that Weyland-Yutani operated within.
This led many of us to believe that it might eschew the horror and action of the movies to tell something of a more corporate and political thriller. Then the plot was revealed, and the trailer dropped, showing us that there will be plenty going on outside of the boardroom.
There was further confusion because many had believed that the show would take place in roughly the same timeframe as Prometheus. That would mean 2093. However, the latest information seems to suggest the show will start in 2120, which is two years before the Nostromo was re-directed and the whole thing was fatefully kicked off.
Whatever happens, we know that a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with a threat unlike anything they have ever seen before. Along the way, clearly, the bio-weapons division of Weyland-Yutani is going to take an interest.
Early reports suggested it would take place on or around the same time as “Prometheus,” which is set in the Earth year of 2093. As more information came to light, it was revealed that the show unfolds in the year 2120 – approximately two years before the events of Ridley Scott’s original 1979 “Alien” film.
A detailed profile in Vanity Fair confirms the presence of cyborgs, or synths in Alien parlance, in this project. In the article, Hawley also revealed that this will crossover into the events in Alien:
“I don’t yet know, in terms of the series from beginning to end, how much time is going to pass or where we’re going to end up, but I do know that at a certain point, the Weyland-Yutani Corporation is going to divert the Nostromo to that planet…We have the opportunity to maybe see what was happening on the other side of that phone call.”
We get to find out pretty soon exactly what is what. Alien: Earth debuts on Disney+ outside the US, and Hulu inside the States on August 12th.
