By Very early tracking figures from analytics film The Quorum are predicting that the upcoming musical film “Wonka,” starring Timothee Chalamet, is headed for an opening in the low $20 million range at the early December box-office reports Deadline.
The project hails from “Paddington” director Paul King and serves as a prequel to the classic Roald Dahl story “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the 1971 Gene Wilder-led film adaptation of it.
Chalamet stars as a young Willy Wonka at a time 25 years before he meets Charlie Bucket and years before he founded his famed chocolate factory.
Warner Bros. Pictures is pushing hard on the marketing where it can with multiple trailers, well over a dozen different poster designs, and Chalamet both gracing the cover of GQ and hosting SNL next weekend.
As we’re still over four weeks away from the film’s release, there’s time for that opening figure to go up – especially if the actor’s strike can be resolved to allow for a last-minute promotional push.
As films like “The Greatest Showman” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” have shown, there’s also the potential for a family-targeted movie in this period of the year to have legs – even after soft starts.
The last incarnation of this story was the 2005 film directed by Tim Burton which grossed $474.9 million worldwide.
