By Multiverses are all the rage at the moment, from “Spider-Verse” and “Loki” to “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “The Flash”. There are no plans to slow that roll just yet, but it doesn’t mean you can’t tackle it from another angle.
“The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman says the upcoming second season of his animated superhero series “Invincible” will have a multiverse as a core part of its stories (like the comic source material has had for many years) but aims to use it differently to most others.
The series focuses on Mark Grayson, a 17-year-old boy who begins to develop superpowers and begins to train to use his abilities under the guidance of his father, Nolan Grayson (aka. Omni-Man).
Speaking with Variety, Kirkman says here it’s about illuminating core aspects of its lead character as opposed to squeezing in a bunch of easter egg references:
“The draw of the multiverse is that you get to play with different aspects of familiar things. It’s just a really easy button to push: ‘OK, we can bring in these Fox characters that everybody remembers. We can have a digital cameo of Christopher Reeve. We’re going to take this thing that’s popular because it’s a nostalgia thing and then amp the nostalgia up even more.’ I consider myself in that fanbase, so I see why it’s so popular.
The only thing I’ll say is, what we’re doing is a little bit different. We’re using the multiverse to examine Mark’s character and what aspects of him we may not necessarily be aware of yet. It’s much more of a character-based story. I mean, we don’t have the luxury of bringing in the Invincible from the popular 1990s cartoon. If we did, we probably would.”
He confirms the show has already recorded all its dialogue for the third season including numerous high-profile guest stars not yet announced.
One thing he guarantees is that, “barring some unforeseen catastrophe,” the 30-month gap between Season 1 and 2 airing will be the longest gap the show will have with the aim to have ultimately a gap between 12-18 months between seasons.
The second season of “Invincible” is set to premiere on Friday, November 3rd on Prime Video.
