In June came the news that both The CW’s “Superman and Lois” and “All American: Homecoming” were both renewed but in order to do so, both would undergo budget cuts.
In the case of “Superman and Lois,” this meant major cast reductions and a shift in location of the story to Metropolis where only the core Kent family (Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Bishop and Alex Garfin), and Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor will be regulars.
Other characters are expected to return, but the actors will only score guest or recurring roles. “Superman & Lois” is more expensive than other CW original dramas due to the special effects.
Now, Deadline is reporting that those budget cuts are also coming to both show’s writer’s rooms with “Superman & Lois” going from eight writers to five for the new season, whilst ‘Homecoming’ will drop from nine to seven.
There are no changes in the writer’s room sizes of CW returning original scripted series “All American” and “Walker”. “Superman and Lois” is also set to run shorter next season at just ten episodes rather than thirteen.
Staff writer Adam Mallinger was one of the ones let go and says on Twitter he doesn’t blame management: “My showrunners were in a difficult spot and I want to be clear they’ve handled it the best they could.” Mallinger has reportedly been assigned an episodic script which he will write as a freelancer.
