Hot off her success in Marvel Studios’ “Agatha All Along” series last year, a new report indicates that series star Kathryn Hahn is being eyed to play the villain Mother Gothel for the live-action “Tangled” movie according to scooper DanielRPK.
The original film was a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Mandy Moore played Rapunzel, a spirited young princess with magical, golden hair who escapes from her isolated tower for the first time to experience the world – embarking on an adventure with a charming thief (Zachary Levi).
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “TANGLED”
She discovers her true identity and face the dangerous truth about the woman, Mother Gothel (Donna Murphy), who kept her captive. It’s revealed over the film that Gothel is a vain and wicked crone who had retained youth for centuries through the healing properties of a magic flower.
When said powers are unintentionally transferred to the hair of a newborn Princess Rapunzel, Gothel kidnapped the baby and locked her away to hoard the healing magic by posing as her overprotective mother.
The original grossed over $590 million worldwide and scored an Oscar nomination. Michael Gracey (“Better Man,” “The Greatest Showman”) is in talks to take the helm of the new film.
Disney is reportedly believed to be developing a number of baddie-centric live-action projects to tie-in to the planned Villains Land Disneyland attraction, which is said to be one reason the upcoming “Hercules” live-action film adaptation was repurposed to focus on the Hades character.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson wrote the latest draft of the screenplay while Kristin Burr and Lucy Kitada produce. Florence Pugh was rumored for Rapunzel at one point but nothing more than that.
