Will Smith has done a post on Instagram teasing something to do with “The Matrix” franchise.

Smith famously turned down the lead role of Neo in 1999’s “The Matrix” to instead star in “Wild Wild West”. The former went on to become an iconic film franchise, the latter one of the biggest studio bombs ever made.

In the new post, a video with computer text recounts Smith’s passing on the role, then asks what it would have been like if Smith had starred. That’s followed by lines telling Smith to “wake up” and that The Matrix has him.

What this means no-one is sure of. A new “Matrix” film has previously been reported to be in development with “The Cabin in the Woods” director Drew Goddard in talks to direct.

Lana Wachowski will executive produce, but this would mark the first “Matrix” movie without her or her sister’s direct involvement.

The original Matrix trilogy ran from 1999-2003 while the franchise made a brief comeback in December 2021 with “The Matrix Resurrections”. The first film remains one of the most iconic sci-fi films of the past few decades, the sequels have had decidedly more mixed receptions.

Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith has been a supporting character in the series since the sequel.
