Early box-office projections for the pre-Christmas weekend have come in with both Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” on track for strong openings.
Deadline reports that the third “Sonic” is presently on track for a very robust $55 million domestic opening weekend – quite good for a film that cost a relatively frugal $120 million to make.
It’s about on par with the $58 million opening of the first film but a little behind the $72.1 million debut of the second. The two prior films went on to gross $320 million and $405 million respectively from budgets of around $90-100 million each.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” meanwhile is tracking for a $50 million start, less than one-third that of Jon Favreau’s photorealistic animated “The Lion King” film which debuted in 2019 to $180 million. That film went on to make $1.657 billion globally – more than justifying its purported $250-260 million budget.
“Mufasa” is said to have a budget of over $200 million so the film will need to have legs and do well internationally to cover its cost. With “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins at the helm, the hope is reviews will be better than the very mixed response the 2019 film received.
Both “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” will be released in cinemas on December 20th.
