Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” opened in cinemas last weekend, but you would hardly know it.
Warner Bros. Pictures released the film with little promotion and into just 31 theaters domestically, despite getting a strong 92% (7.2/10) score on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, the studio officially didn’t report its box-office numbers as this was an awards qualifying run as such.
That didn’t stop third-party figures from coming in with projections of $260,000-275,000 for its opening weekend – a per screen average of roughly $7,500 which is quite good. It also opened in just six territories internationally and made $5 million in that run.
Earlier this week the indication was the studio would pull the film from release Friday now that the qualifying run is over. However, something appears to have changed as longtime trade reporter Matthew Belloni says on X that the studio has reversed course and will keep it running for a little while longer.
He indicates they will expand the film a tiny bit – bumping it up to 46 theaters this weekend. Beyond that it’s not clear, though the trades have reported the plan is to have the film on the Max streaming service over the Christmas holidays.
The film should get a big promotional push when it releases on Max as it will likely be positioned as a draw for subscribers ala their recent “Salem’s Lot” remake.
There are no plans for a nationwide theatrical release as THR says it would “tack on tens of millions in marketing costs”. The film cost less than $35 million to produce.
