First it was planned as a series back in 2020, then by 2022 it was becoming a movie, but now it seems the status of the “Armor Wars” project at Marvel Studios is unclear.

Don Cheadle will reprise his role of Col. James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes in the project following his most recent appearance in the role in the widely panned “Secret Invasion” series.

That show revealed a Skrull named Raava had been impersonating Rhodes for a long time, but it was not clear how long – potentially as far back as just after the events of “Captain America: Civil War”.

The “Armor Wars” series will have to answer that question, but according to Cheadle himself – he’s as in the dark as everyone else regarding when Marvel intends to move forward on the project.

Speaking with TV Line, he was asked where the project stands, he says: “You can find out and let me know.” The outlet said the last they heard was about the project being switched from a TV series to a movie, to which Cheadle says:

“Yeah. I think the word that’s the most salient in that sentence is ‘switched.’ [Laughs] I don’t know, I’m not sure where anything is right now. I think things are going through a lot of changes, and we’ll see what happens, we’ll see what it is.”

Asked about his reaction to playing a Skrull Rhodey for almost all of “Secret Invasion,” he says:

“Uh… you know, there was no… it wasn’t a demand. It was a request. ‘What do you think about playing this?’ And it was to set up stuff in the following thing. So, if the following thing happens, and all those things were set up, then that’s one thing. If, as you said, it doesn’t, then we can talk about how I feel about it after!”

“Secret Invasion” scored a famously rough reception, the $212 million-budgeted series landed mixed reviews and major backlash over its finale. Combined with the soft reception for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the extensive reshoots with “Captain America: Brave New World,” it seems Marvel’s track record with political thriller stories of late isn’t so great.
