Valve has announced that its portable handheld gaming console, SteamDeck, is getting major price increases – hikes of an eye-watering 45%.

The 1Tb OLED model will jump from $649 to $949 in the U.S. while the 512Gb OLED model goes from $549 to $789.

In Australia, the price will jump from $899 to $1199 for the 512Gb model and from $1049 to $1429 for the 1Tb model.

In an official statement on its website, Valve puts the sharp price hike down to the ongoing issues with rising memory and storage costs (aka RAMageddon) caused by AI company demand:

“Steam Deck itself hasn’t changed; these new prices reflect the current state of component costs and other global logistical challenges across the industry as a whole. We’ll keep you updated if anything changes.”

The move has also raised obvious questions again about the price of Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine console with IGN indicating that the device coming in for under $1,000 seems unlikely at this point with $1,200 now the speculated price.
