Recently came a report that “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger was considering directing the proposed reboot of “Clue” at Sony Pictures.

That report originated at The Insneider who is now reporting that Cregger opted to pass on the project and is now in talks to direct something else – a new “Resident Evil” film.

The news comes at an interesting time for the “Resident Evil” franchise. The games have come back into popularity thanks to the remakes of the second through fourth title along with the eighth title “Village”. A ninth mainline entry and at least one more remake are tipped to be on the way.

The media adaptations have notoriously stunk. After the Milla Jovovich-led series wrapped to box-office success and increasingly negative reception, two further attempts were made to reboot the property for the screen.

Those were a Netflix TV series and the film “Welcome to Raccoon City,” both of which were met with a mixed/bad reception. The TV series was quickly cancelled, the film a box-office bomb.

Details on the movie Cregger would direct are not available so it’s not sure if it would fit into an existing continuity.

Cregger recently shot the film “Weapons” which is currently dated for a January 2026 release. Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Brian Tyree Henry, Tom Burke, Austin Abrams, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong star.
